This piece was inspired by seeing such a lovely flower growing in such harsh, hot, dry conditions. It was flourishing in place!
I toned the 400 grit UArt paper with an underpainting in watercolor. Once dry to touch, I lightly sketched the subject using my photo as reference and painted in various hard and soft pastels letting the undercolor peek through.
